Double Bed Size – What Size is a Double Mattress?

double bed size

Need to know a double mattress size? Or perhaps you’re upgrading your bed frame and need to know a certain double bed size?

Thankfully, these two tend to complement one another. Manufacturers tend to adhere to standard measurements when it comes to bed frames and mattresses. So, you shouldn’t struggle too much to find a matching pair.

But, this isn’t always the case. Bed sizes can vary between manufacturers. What’s more, a common double bed size can change depending on what region of the world you live in.

Starting to seem a little more complicated? Don’t worry. To clear things up a little, we’re going to look at some common double bed sizes from countries across the world.

What Size is a Double Bed in the UK & Ireland?

The UK and Ireland do not have officially standardized bed sizes. However, most manufacturers abide by common dimensions.

The most common size for a double mattress in the UK and Ireland is 135cm x 190cm. However, these measurements can vary between manufacturers.

It should also be noted that manufacturers in this region can factor in certain tolerances of the actual dimensions quoted. This means that the mattress you receive could be slightly longer or shorter than what was stated. Overall though, this tolerance is unlikely to inhibit the performance or usability of your mattress. You should refer to the manufacturer’s terms of sale for any mention of tolerance.

Double Bed Size – Europe

The most common double bed size (Especially in Northern Europe) is 180 cm x 200 cm. Countries such as Poland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Norway, Netherlands, Luxembourg and Iceland often share this common size.

This is not the only double mattress size used in Europe, however. In fact, depending on the country, the size of a double bed can vary quite considerably.

In Portugal, a double bed (or Casal) often measures 140 cm x 190 cm. Meanwhile, Spain refers to their double beds as “Matrimonio”. Lengths can vary from 180, 190 and 200 cm, while widths can be either 135 cm or 150 cm.

There are two common double mattress sizes in Switzerland. These are 160 cm x 200 cm and 180 cm x 200 cm.

Italy, refer to their double beds as “due piazza” (two places) also have two common double beds sizes. These are 160 cm x 190 cm and 180 cm x 190 cm.

Common sizes in France are 140 cm x 190 cm, 160 cm x 200 cm and 180 cm x 200 cm.

Double Mattress Size in North America

America is one of just 3 countries to use the imperial measurement system. As such, they use inches to convey the size of their beds. Because of this, sizes can seem a little irregular when converted to the metric system.

For example, a common double bed size in North America is 53.5” x 74.5” this translates to 136 cm x 189 cm.
